I know that homosexuality is a taboo subject for many Assyrians - While we don't kill them or anything, some of us hate them very much.

I actually think that I'm the only gay Assyrian around, or at least in my area (we have so many Assyrians in Sydney).

Anyway, what delights me about us was the fact that the ancient Assyria empire viewed homosexuals as blessed people and seemed to have tolerated them (read that on Wiki somewhere).

What are your thoughts on homosexuality and gay marriage?

speaking in a nationalistic sense, gays and homosexuals in general, I am indifferent to. If an Assyrian person was homosexual, I wouldn't hate or discriminate against them, but they are useless in the sense of expanding our population, but this is only my nationalistic view.

in my normal views, I just plain don't care, but that level of indifference is a little scary to me, because my amount of indifference could make me as useless to my people as a homosexual assyrian in the nationalistic sense.

Well I live in a country now where most people accept gays. In my school pupils are trying not to use the word ''gay'' when they swear, as we learn to accept them more and more when we get older. I actually had 2 teachers who had family members that was gay, so they tried to explain for us that it is a very normal thing, and I by myself think that youre not 'sick'' just because youre gay. God made us, and if he created you as a gay, well then its what you are. If you believe that youre born as a gay, then it was God that made you this way. If you believe you are 'sick' just because youre gay, then you probably did choose it by yourself. I think the first thing sounds more right, because you dont really choose who you fall in love with :). I dont really care if someone is gay, as long as im not forced to be in a relationship with another girl  But maybe my thought are like that because Im only 16, I dont know. I just wont 'hate' them as some other people do.

As an educated and liberal-minded Assyrian, I am personally indifferent to his matter, but we must remember that many Assyrians nationalists, writers, poets, painters, musicians, fashion designers as well as political activists that run the Assyrian Genocide Center have been gay. We must not just wipe them away because of who they are. Someone was telling me recently about an Assyrian Neo-Stalinist online forum that discussed a playwright named Bani Babilla (of Salamas, died in 2011 in NYC) who was disowned for being gay. The article on the forum compared Bani's fate with the controversy that surrounded the Assyrian Marxist (and Catholic) painter Hannibal Alkhas and likewise the left wing Socialist Assyrian violinist Sooren Alexander, and how some skipped Sooren's funeral because of his beliefs, limiting his goodbye to those with center-left views, even though it was a Catholic burial conducted by Mar Bawai Soro. Here I want to add that I personally greatly respect Sooren, love his music, and went to his funeral. I felt that as an Assyrian youth, I have a duty to honor the Assyrian greats before me. The weather was 111? that day and I was unwell, the doctor advised me to seek bed rest, but I went nonetheless. I can state that it was one of the most important days of my life, and I wrote an extensive and powerful journal entry about that day.

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of LGBTQ Assyrians, even in Sydney lol. I'm Assyrian and I'm bisexual. We can be Assyrian nationalists and still stand up for human rights. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

Don't mean to pry, lol, but are you a guy or a girl? And are you more on the homosexual side?

Hi. I'm a guy...lol. I would say I'm equally attracted to men and women :)....though I'm more discreet when it comes to dudes lol.

I would like to bump this because I want to know what the newer users think of homosexuality. It's not a really an ancient thread, so it's useless making another one.

I dont like gays but then again i dont dislike them, i didnt know u were gay lol. I actually just wish l could make them want to make children with women so that our population grows, what l really wonder is why did evolution create gay people? l mean its common even in the animal kingdom, now thats a question l wonder....

Don't worry. Our population is growing and gays are a minority anyway. They won't affect reproduction.

I have no idea why gay people exist. It's probably hormonal, I believe. Sometimes a child may get more traits from one parent, and this would include their sexuality as well. In my case, I probably got my mother's "heterosexuality", so in turn I became homosexual. Even lesbian mothers (who have kids from straight sperm donors) can have gay sons, but this trait can be be gotten from the grandmother or her sisters. This is just my theory. I may be wrong.

There are other theories like the "gay uncle theory", meaning that gay men exist to aid their siblings with their children as the father would go out and hunt. It's pretty interesting, but it sounds overreaching and contrived.

To put it simply without the risk of coming off rude or offensive: I have negative views regarding homosexuality, but I don't hate homosexuals at all.
